Nintendo Switch Review

Nintendo has always been innovative. They always try to do something new and creative. It doesn't always work, as the Wii U showed us, but they always try. No matter how you feel about Nintendo in recent years, you have to admit that they always try to do something unique. The Switch is no different.

The Nintendo Switch signals a new era of Nintendo. We all know that. However, at its core, it is still very much a Nintendo console, in the best and the worst ways. It comes with all the charm you'd expect. It has a lot of the barriers that are a Nintendo signature at this point. I'm speaking in very vague terms, but there is a lot to say about the Switch. Let's just dig into it.

The specs on the Switch are honestly nothing that impressive. However, as they always have, Nintendo makes the most of them. Although the screen is only 720p, much lower than the modern expectation, the games all look beautiful on the screen. The display is so crisp. I'm sure it will depend on a game-to-game basis, but everything I've played is utterly breathtaking.

As stated above, the Nintendo Switch specs aren't very good. I say that with the world's biggest possible asterisk. The specs are not good compared to those of the Xbox One or the Playstation 4. That said, they are miles better than those of the Playstation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS, the only other handheld consoles on the market that aren't basically tiny gaming PCs (which come at an expected lofty price).

The Switch has a great build quality. Or at least I think so. I've only had it for a week, but I'm not noticing any signs of significant wear and tear in the future. Many have pointed out the fact that the Switch dock is scratching the console's screen. While that is entirely possible, I'm not sure that I entirely buy it. I'm sure some of these cases are true, but from my experience, I don't see this being a huge issue. If you treat your console with the necessary carefulness of any device with a fragile screen, I honestly don't think you'll run into any issues. The dock has rubber liners inside of it to prevent scratches. These are the only parts of the dock that should even touch the screen. You'd have to really jam it in there to get any real damage.

While I really like the Switch, it's far from being a perfect console. There's plenty of things you expect from modern consoles that aren't included, and even Nintendo staples that are just gone. There's no web browser on the Nintendo Switch (or at least one you can access normally). Virtual Console isn't there at all, however Nintendo has stated that it will be eventually. Many outlets are reporting issues with Joy-Con connectivity. I haven't personally experienced this, but the reports are far too numerous to be ignored. While it seems to have at least partially been resolved with the Day 1 patch, a lot of people are apparently still encountering this issue.

Easily the worst part of the Switch are the wrist straps. When I first tried to put them on, they got stuck. I was genuinely terrified that I had broken my Switch before I even got a chance to play Zelda. I managed to get them off with my precious Joy-Con safe and sound, but it was a very worrisome experience. I haven't tried to put them back on, because I can't afford to buy new Joy-Con, and I love the ones I have like they are my own children. As most of the current games aren't very motion control reliant, this isn't too big of a problem so far. However, when a game like ARMS comes out, I'm not too sure what I'm going to do. There's nothing on the Joy-Con to really hold on to, and I imagine that they'd slide out of mid-gaming-session sweaty palms pretty easily while tossing your hands around.

I have a few more small gripes with the system. It charges abysmally slow, especially while docked. Fast charging is a thing with most USB-C devices, however Nintendo has not included it. The Switch already can get pretty toasty, so I imagine that fast charging would only further scorch your hands. I also really don't like how lousy the Switch's attempts to connect to WiFi. My phone has no problem downloading huge files off of my WiFi, but my Switch can't make a simple Twitter post in the same room.  I can easily switch on my Mobile Hotspot, but if I didn't have unlimited data, I'd be pretty peeved.

The Switch has a fair bit of problems. It's not the most powerful machine out there. There's tons of negativity floating around about the little system. However, even when all of that is considered, the Switch is still the best handheld ever, or at least in a long time. And with a bit of work, I think it could easily become the best system of all time too.

Comments

  1. It's been a long time since I owned a handheld system and Nintendo Switch appears to be the perfect choice, although after reading the minor issues I'm not completely sold. To be honest if I never purchased a PlayStation 4 in 2016 i most likely would've bought one by now.

Why Every Nintendo Fan NEEDS To Buy 1-2 Switch

1-2 Switch  is the only Switch exclusive launch title developed by Nintendo. If that and the fact that it actually looks like a pretty fun time don't sell you, I know what might. When presented with this information, your perception on the necessity of 1-2 Switch  very well may change. The reason you should buy this game is because of the Switch itself.  I'll get to that in a second. First, let's look at the launch of the Nintendo Switch. The games confirmed to be releasing are Breath of the Wild, 1-2 Switch, Just Dance 2017, Skylanders Imaginators, World of Goo, Binding of Isaac, Little Inferno, Super Bomberman R, I Am Setsuna, and Human Resource Machine . While many of these may end up being really good games, they've almost all already been released on other consoles, or will do so simultaneously with the Switch release. The only "made for Switch" games here are Super Bomberman R ...and 1-2 Switch .   Super Bomberman R  looks okay, but with Konami

How I Changed My Mind On The Launch Lineup and 1-2 Switch

If we're being honest, the original Nintendo Switch launch lineup was pretty weak. It featured a measly five games, two of which were third party ports that will likely not sell at all. However, in the five weeks since the Nintendo Switch was fully revealed, this lineup has grown. It's grown a lot. The original Year One lineup picture posted by Nintendo of America's official Twitter account  A lot of games have been added since the initial lineup. The launch that originally consisted of five games is now at least twelve games. I am Setsuna, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, World of Goo, Little Inferno, Human Resource Machine , Snipperclips, and Fast RMX  have all been added to the March 3rd release day. /u/AbsoluteMagnitude's most recent Switch lineup  The lineup in general has grown exponentially.
